What to Wear on the Go: Spring Awakening Music Festival 2012

Packing is a pain. Especially packing for an event that lasts for multiple days. Tomorrow, I leave for Chicago for the Spring Awakening Music Festival featuring Skrillex, Afrojack, Benny Benassi, and many other electronic, dubstep artists. The fest lasts for two days: Saturday, June 16th, and Sunday, June 17th.  I have been thinking about what to wear for weeks, and two days ago, my brother, who got me tickets, texted me this:

“You better have some outrageous outfits. No khakis here.”

Good thing I was already prepared. So, this is a guide on how to dress comfortably, but stylishly, for a summer music festival. I planned for travel outfits, daytime and nighttime outfits for the weekend (Friday-Monday). You really don’t want to be walking around for hours in something uncomfortable and inappropriate, so keep these things in mind when planning: weather, comfort, cute, and surroundings.

Most of the clothing here I purchased at Forever 21, H&M, or Urban Outfitters.

1.) Friday, June 15th: Travel Day

Travelling in uncomfortable clothing is awful. And, there is nothing more annoying than having to disrobe at the security checkpoint. So, on travel days, make sure you look nice (because you never know who you’ll see at the airport) and you are wearing comfortable, practical clothing. Check out “What Not to Wear to the Airport” for more general tips on appropriate travel clothing.

For this trip, a loose, green, printed tank top from H&M, high-waisted denim shorts from Urban Outfitters, an H&M belt, some necklaces, rings, easy-to-take-off boots from Forever 21, and sunglasses from Forever 21.

2.) Saturday, June 16th: Day 1 of Spring Awakening

Make sure to check the weather before you pack! This weekend in Chicago, it is supposed to be in the nineties. For Saturday, a flowy, short-to-long skirt from Forever 21, a black tank top from H&M that I cropped, actual Greek sandals from Greece, a few rings, a necklace, and the sunglasses. I also threw in the bathing suit, just in case I decided to head to the beach.

Assume you will hot and sweaty after a day of romping about among hundreds of people, in the middle of June, to crazy music. So later, when you inevitably go out again, change into something else for the sake of everyone around you. I chose a Forever 21 printed dress with the back cut out, Greek sandals, and some jewelry.

Sunday, June 17th: Day 2 of Spring Awakening

Another hot day means a great day for shorts and a loose fitting shirt. Gray knit tank from Urban Outfitters, teal shorts from H&M, Greek sandals, a necklace, a ring, and sunglasses.

Same thing applies for the second night of the festival: change your clothing. Black and white cropped tank from Urban Outfitters, red high-waisted shorts from Forever 21, black boots from Forever 21, and some jewerlry and I will be good to go.

Monday, June 18th: Travel Day

I head back home early Monday morning, so I took into account that it might be cooler temps outside. Black pants form H&M, black, printed tank top from Forever 21, black boots from Forever 21, some jewelry, and sunglasses. Perfect outfit for the airport.

Pack a few extra shirts just in case you wake up on the day of and think, “Ugh I hate this!” Or if you spill something on yourself, or if someone spills something on you, or any other reason.

If you are a serious planner like me, then you will most likely have matched your accessories to each outfit. Get creative with accessories. Bright colors and interesting textures are great.

The purse and sunglasses are from Forever 21; the belt, the green stone and flat metal rings are from H&M; the three striped bracelets are from Paper Source; the other rings and bracelets were gifts (thanks friends!). A way to ensure a unique, statement piece is to make them yourself.

There are tons of DIY jewelry ideas online. Honestly…WTF inspired the multi-colored necklaces. Wandering craft stores will also give you ideas for what to make. I found the feathers and pendants at a craft store, and only later realized what I was going to make with them. I am pretty pleased with what I came up with.

The most important thing is to feel comfortable in what you are wearing. If you feel good and look good then you should have an amazing time.

Happy Travels!
